Shop slab cost in Tampa by size
A shop slab is a big flat pour, which makes it one of the better values per square foot in concrete. Here are the two Tampa sources at the sizes people build.

HomeBlue prices are for 4 to 6 inch reinforced slabs. Computed figures multiply area by $5.55 to $11.09 per sq ft. Thicker floors, edges, drains and fill cost extra.

Thickness for what goes in the shop slab
Florida's residential minimum for a floor slab is 3.5 inches, but a shop is not a living room. MBMI puts typical shop floors at 4 to 6 inches and 6 to 8 where heavy equipment works, and a lift or heavy machine usually comes with the maker's own spec for the concrete under it. Rather than pour the whole floor to the heaviest spot, a slab can be thickened where the load is.

Plan these before the pour
- Lift location and the lift maker's concrete thickness and strength spec
- Floor drains or a slope toward the door if vehicles bring rain in
- Conduit for future outlets and equipment in the floor
- Anchor bolts or embeds for the building, set from its plan
- Joint layout drawn on paper, panels as square as the shop allows
Joints and cracks in a big Tampa slab
Concrete shrinks as it dries, and a big slab will crack somewhere. Joints decide where. NRMCA's guidance: space joints no more than 24 to 36 times the thickness, keep panels close to square with the long side no more than 1.5 times the short, cut a quarter of the depth, and saw within roughly 4 to 12 hours of finishing. Florida's residential code also lets contraction joints be skipped when the concrete carries synthetic fiber or 6x6 W1.4xW1.4 welded wire fabric, but a shop floor that size usually gets them anyway.
| Thickness | Spacing range | Practical maximum |
|---|---|---|
| 4 in | 8 to 12 ft | about 10 ft |
| 5 in | 10 to 15 ft | 15 ft |
| 6 in | 12 to 18 ft | 15 ft |

Pouring a shop slab in Tampa weather
A 30x40 at 6 inches is over 22 yards of concrete, several truckloads that have to be placed and finished before the surface gets ahead of the crew. Between late May and early October, Tampa Bay's storms build late morning and peak mid-afternoon, so a shop pour starts early. NRMCA's hot-weather guidance adds: never sprinkle water on the surface to make finishing easier, and keep the slab moist while it cures. See pouring concrete in Tampa rain and humidity.
